This survey will be used to analyze the risk of exposure for dog owners, animal health professionals and people who work with dogs to several parasites that are present in the cities of Calgary and Edmonton. Our results will be distributed around Alberta to help prevent disease transmission and spillover between humans and dogs.

This survey will be analyzed by graduate students from the University of Calgary. Your data will not be shared with anyone. Ethics certificate: REB—–

Echinococcus multilocularis in coyotes

Echinococcus multilocularis is a microscopical tapeworm that infects rodents and coyotes, but also dogs and humans.

Most common parasites in Calgarian dogs

In 2012, Annya Smith developed a project to investigate the prevalence of the most common pathogens in Calgarian dogs.

Parasite prevalence was 50.2%.  Giardia spp. (24.7%), Cryptosporidium spp. (14.7%), and Cystoisospora spp. (16.8%) were the most prevalent parasites. Helminth prevalence was low (4.1%).
